A credit union is a member-owned financial cooperative, controlled by its members and operated on the principle of people helping people, providing credit at competitive rates as well as other financial services.
Credit unions are member-owned and operated and a not-for-profit entity. Banks are for-profit businesses, and they have significant expenses and need to pay shareholders and their board members. As a result, some credit unions offer better credit cards than the banks.
Membership at credit unions is exclusive. You can usually qualify based on where you live, work, or if you have a qualifying relative. If you do not meet the standard eligibility requirements, some credit unions allow you to join by donating to a partner organization.
